last night happened again, and today I looked carefully at every single logfile (gnome-system-log) but I could not find a single hint of what happened at the time of the freezing.
I'll keep checking...

same message with i5 M450 + ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series, Ubuntu 10.10.
System seems to run ok but once in a while the screen freeze (including the mouse pointer) and I can only poweroff/on...
